Shiraz, Banks, & Jacobsen Awarded
Hollins•Schechter Campaign for 2008
Building on the momentum created from the new brand image launched
by the firm in February 2007 a contest was held for employees
to design the firm’s new ad campaign for 2008. Hollins•Schechter
recruited marketing and communication executives Erin Freeman
and Marta Newhart to judge the entries. Ms. Freeman is the Managing
Director of Communications at TCW and Ms. Newhart is Director
– Communications, Space & Intelligence, for The Boeing Company.
Both are graduates of Pepperdine University’s prestigious President/Key
Executive MBA Program.
Six individuals or teams submitted nearly 100 ideas, most in a
live pitch to the judges and the firm. The judges then chose the
entries they felt best embodied the firm’s direction and mission
for consideration by the partnership. Principals Andy Hollins,
Bruce Schechter, and Kathy Carter announced the winner at an awards
ceremony before the entire firm and Ms. Freeman returned to give
personal assessments to all entrants.
The team comprised of Project Manager Asal Nadjarzadeh, Office
Services Supervisor Linzee Banks, and Director of IT Vince "Jake"
Jacobsen submitted the winning entry that will debut in January
in Orange County publications.

a site that was once part of the historic Rancho Santiago de Santa
Ana, granted by the Spanish government in 1810. Nearly 200 years
after that original grant, the state-of-the-art Donald P. Kennedy
Hall opened in 1999. Named for benefactor, Chapman Trustee, and
chairman of the board of First American Financial Corporation,
the building incorporates the historic façade of a 19th century
structure while also integrating the latest technology for legal
study and teaching. By marrying the old with the new, Kennedy
Hall symbolizes Chapman’s commitment to its legacy and to providing
innovative, personalized and results-oriented legal training.

Supreme Court Upholds Hollins•Schechter
Non-suit Ruling
The Supreme Court of California upheld a motion for non-suit made
by Principal Bruce Schechter in Castaneda v Olsher. The plaintiff
was shot and injured while he was a bystander to a gang confrontation
in the mobilehome park in which he lived. He brought action against
our client for premises liability and after five days of testimony
before a jury, the plaintiff rested his case and Mr. Schechter made
an oral motion for nonsuit. The trial court granted the motion based
on Mr. Schechter’s argument that the plaintiff had failed to show
that a shooting was highly foreseeable and thus the landlord owed
no duty to the plaintiff (Ann M. v. Pacific Plaza Shopping Center
(1993) 6 Cal.4th 666). The Court of Appeal reversed the Imperial
County Superior Court Decision but the Supreme Court reinstated
the non-suit for our client. |
