Maria Chaves-Hawley

    Catastrophic Injury

Defense litigation is often compared to a game of chess. The best players all acknowledge that the battle is generally won before the first piece is even moved. Maria Chaves-Hawley firmly holds to this dictum. As Sun Tzu states in The Art of War, “Victorious warriors win first and then go to war.” Before Ms. Chaves-Hawley ever opens a court calendar, she has already prepared her defense strategy to include all possible contingencies, all relevant evidence and testimony, and every move and counter move the opposition will make within the rules of law in order to assure the best possible outcome for her client. In short, she has already fought the battle before she ever steps into a court or a negotiation room.

“In defending my clients,” states Ms. Chaves-Hawley, “I am fully dedicated to the proposition that I will fight zealously and uncompromisingly on their behalf. My posture is always one that is prepared to go to court, while being willing to seek a negotiated remedy.”

Ms. Chaves-Hawley’s staunch dedication to no-holds-barred advocacy stems from her early days as defense counsel in matters ranging from criminal allegations to immigration issues, DUI cases and family-law disputes. In such matters, not only were crippling monetary sums at stake, but personal liberty and freedom rested on Ms. Chaves-Hawley’s ability to effectively represent her client’s rights.

“In the criminal law cases I was involved in, I quickly saw that anything less than my 100% commitment could make the difference between my client’s freedom or a mark that would forever limit their future,” commented Ms. Chaves-Hawley, “In every civil litigation matter I take on, it is not simply about prevailing that is most important, it is protecting the lives and freedom of those I represent that moves me to fight so hard on their behalf.”

Ms. Chaves-Hawley has worked for a variety of law firms since receiving her Juris Doctorate from California Western School of Law in San Diego, California in 2009. She has participated in all aspects of case preparation, management and litigation at both the local and district court level. From evidence gathering, witness deposition, relevant law research, motion and appeal filings to negotiation settlement evaluations and all post-case follow-through, Ms. Chaves-Hawley has time and again proven she is an advocate her clients can trust to represent their best interests and to tenaciously fight for the optimal outcome.
